HC questions Y-category security to ex-MP Dhananjay Singh

The Allahabad high court on Wednesday asked the additional solicitor general of India Shashi Prakash Singh and the state government counsel to inform the bench by May 25 as to how a criminal-turned-politician, Dhananjay Singh, had been provided Y-category security and why security cover should not be withdrawn from a person like the former MP, who is allegedly involved in 24 criminal cases, including seven murder cases.

The bench, comprising chief justice DB Bhosale and justice Suneet Kumar, was hearing a public interest litigation filed by one Prahlad Gupta of Jaunpur, seeking withdrawal of Y-category security provided to Dhananjay Singh.

It was brought to the notice of the court that after security cover was provided to the former Jaunpur MP, four more criminal cases were registered against him.

The bench was also told that the former MP was misusing the security cover and committing crimes.

The court was shocked to know that a person involved in murder cases and other grave offences had been provided Y-category security cover, that too free of cost.

The state government has to apprise the bench by May 25 regarding the moving of an application in the court concerned for cancellation of bail granted to the former MP in various pending criminal cases.
